Rural Schools: KWHA warns politicians on teachers' transfer
Apparently touched the by what it called deplorable condition of primary schools in rural areas of Kwara State, the State House of Assembly on Wednesday directed the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) to take proper statistics of all the schools.
This, it noted, would enable the board identifies the problems and promptly solve them.
The resolution followed a motion titled "Deplorable condition, of primary schools in Rural Areas of Kwara State" moved by the Deputy Speaker, Prof Mohammed Gana Yisa and other two members.
The parliament observed that there is decay in rural schools owing to inadequate teachers, parental attitudes, teachers output and lack of proper monitoring of the school activities by the SUBEB.
The lawmakers decried attitudes of the teachers, who obtain transfer from rural schools to urban centres at the expense of pupil's education.
Reading the resolutions, the Speaker, Barrister Rasak Atunwa told SUBEB to ensure even distribution of teachers to schools across the state.
Atunwa said the legislature directed the inspectorate division of SUBEB to be alive to its responsibility of proper monitoring of schools.
On teachers who transfer appointment, the house warned, "No person including political office holders should interfere in posting of teachers to schools in rural areas".
The motion read in part: "Many primary schools in the rural areas are without enough teachers with some schools having just two teachers and even one in some schools handling classes 1 - 6 and at the same time acting as the Headmaster.
"Most teachers posted to rural areas do not reside there but instead report for duty from neighbouring urban centres.
"Some of the teachers posted to rural schools do make shifting arrangement within themselves in order to carry out their duties on weekdays.
"Some villages, pupils of different classes are taught in one classroom while most of these classrooms lack furniture, equipment and other instructional materials.
Meanwhile, the legislature has passed the Kwara State Content Development Agency Bill into third reading and final passage.
The Speaker has however directed the Clerk, Mr Ayotunde Oyeniyi to prepare neat copy of the passed bill for the State Governor's assent.
