Why Council Strike Will Persist-– NULGE

Date: 2015-07-26

THE Kwara State Chapter of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), has vowed not to call off its two-weeks-old strike, until the workers received at least three months of their salary arrears.

The General Secretary of the Union in the state, Abayomi Afolabi, who disclosed this, directed workers in the 16 Local Governments to remain at home until their full arrears are paid.

While stating that the leadership of the union is still negotiating with the state government on the payment of the arrears, the Secretary said the fund on ground can only meet the needs for April salary, which cannot meet the demand of the workers, noting that some councils are owing up to five months arrears.

He said the union would not call of the strike until the workers received at least three months arrears. "LG workers in the 16 councils and the Local Government Service Commission in Kwara should continue to remain at home until we receive at least three months salaries."

It should be recalled that the council workers in the 16 local governments in the state began an indefinite strike penultimate Thursday, following the non-payment of their over four months salaries.
