Roads corps deploy for end of Ramadan
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has deployed vehicles and personnel to ensure sanity on the nation's highways during this year's Eid-el-Fitri Sallah celebration starting on Wednesday.
The agency has deployed 300 patrol vehicles, 50 Ambulances, 75 motor bikes, ten tow trucks and more than 20 000 personnel including special marshals for the commemoration ending on Sunday.
Imoh Etuk, Corps Commander Corps Public Education Officer, disclosed the deployments along designated routes.
He said the development was in line with the pursuant to its 2015 strategic goals towards improving road safety.
"This year's nationwide exercise which is partial fulfillment of the Corps' 2015 strategic goals of reducing road crashes by 20 percent and fatality by 30 percent, has become necessary to ensure safer road use during the festive period, usually associated with high volume of vehicular traffic," said Etuk.
He said the special patrol also entailed intensive patrols, prompt rescue services, strict enforcement of traffic rules and robust public enlightenment campaigns across the nation.
Etuk said Corps Marshal, Boboye Oyeyemi, approved the deployment of personnel and logistics along 23 designated critical corridors and black spots such as Lokoja-Benin-Auchi, Abaji-Lokoja, Abuja-Keffi-Akwanga-HawanKibo-Jos, Minna-Birnin-Kebbi-Sokoto-Gusau-Funtua-Zaria, Potiskum-Damaturu, Kabba highways and 65 routes identified for this exercise.
Etuk added that 24 emergency response centres are also located at designated routes in the FCT, Kaduna, Gombe, Jigawa, Taraba, Niger, Kogi, Ondo, Edo, Osun, Nasarawa, Plateau and Kwara States and will be operational throughout the Eid-el-Fitri Sallah.
He said stakeholders such as the Nigerian Police, Nigerian Army, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, National Emergency Management Agency and others would complement FRSC.
Eid-el-Fitri Sallah celebrates the end of Ramadan, the Muslim Holy Month.
