Focus on agric not oil, Kwara AFAN charges Buhari

Date: 2015-05-15

Chairman of All Farmers' Association of Nigeria (AFAN) in Kwara State, Elder Daniel Ajiboye has advised the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, to give maximum priority to the agriculture sector in his incoming government.

He specifically challenged the incoming president to focus more on agriculture than oil in order to fully diversify the nation's revenue base.

Speaking with Daily Trust in Ilorin, Ajiboye lamented that the over-dependence on oil as the mainstay of the economy has diverted attention from agriculture.

He said under normal circumstances, agriculture should be accorded more priority than oil given its potential in driving many youths out of unemployment.

He therefore urged President-elect Buhari to make the sector the kernel of his economic revolution.

"I think I will like to advise the incoming government to concentrate on agriculture than even oil. That's the only way we can address the challenge especially in terms of processing of the agriculture outputs. We should establish industries to process our agriculture produce", he said.
