Ilorin airport decries encroachment by herders

Date: 2015-03-18

The Manager of Ilorin International Airport, Alhaji Abubakar Bibi, has decried the constant encroachment of herdsmen with their cattle into the airport's runway.

He therefore solicited the support of the Nigerian Air force to curtail the activities of herdsmen.

Daily Trust reports that the Ilorin Airport has continuously lamented over the danger posed by herdsmen who allegedly move their cattle along the runway.

The airport manager, who met the new Commander of 203 Medium Airlift Group, Kwara State, Air Commodore Yakin Babatunde Ishola, described the herdsmen's continual encroachment as a major challenge for the airport.

The manager said "We have a challenge confronting us here. The herdsmen have continued to intrude into the airport premises with their cattle to graze. This is dangerous to the runway in particular.

The aviation security staff who are not armed have continued to carry out drastic measures to prevent them but these Fulanis usually carry weapons along with them which is dangerous for us civilians.

"I believe if they see a soldier with a gun, they will never attempt to trespass into the airport again. Therefore, we seek for your cooperation in stopping their activities."

Bibi equally urged the Air force to notify the management whenever there is flight after the official working hours (6am-10pm) especially when bringing electoral materials so that the airport can assist in successful landing of the flight.

Responding, Air Commodore Ishola stressed that the Air force would continue to partner with airport authorities in ensuring safety of the premises.
