Kwara 2015: Uncertainty over Ahmed's running mate

Date: 2015-01-01

There appears to be uncertainty in Kwara State over the running mate to Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed who is the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the state.

Ahmed is yet to make any public pronouncement about his running mate about three weeks after picking the APC ticket.

Sources told Daily Trust that Ahmed is delaying making his running mate public because the present deputy governor, Elder Peter Kishira, may be dropped for another person to be announced soon.

Daily Trust correspondent observed that various radio and television jingles as well as the governor's campaign posters have omitted the name of his running mate. This has fuelled speculations that Kishira might be replaced by another candidate.

It was however gathered that the replacement would be done before the final deadline for the submission of governorship candidate on January 13. The impending replacement of Kishira, sources say, was due to old age.

A source privy to the matter said, "with the look of things, the deputy governor might not contest with the governor in 2015 because of old age.

The thinking is that he might not be able to withstand the rigour of the campaign."

Kishira who hails from Ilesha-Baruba in Baruten Local Government in the northern part of the state was a permanent secretary before he was picked in 2011 as Ahmed's running mate.

When contacted, Ahmed's spokesman Dr Muideen Akorede and the spokesman of APC Sulyman Buhari said they were not aware of the move to drop Kishira.
