'Less than 10 per cent of Kwara schools have libraries'
The Kwara State government has been urged to renovate existing libraries, build new ones and procure relevant resource materials in order to improve the standard of all school libraries across the state.
This was the resolution passed by the state House of Assembly after the lawmakers debated on the motion moved by the Chairman House Committee on Education and Human Capital Development, Nimota Ibrahim, on repositioning, revitalising and resuscitating libraries in the state.
The chairman observed that libraries which are supposed to provide a conducive environment for easy learning to their numerous users did not exist in most schools, expressing his worry with the dilapidated condition of and services in some libraries.
In his contribution, Deputy Speaker, Professor Gana Yisa, said less than 10 percent of schools in the state had libraries, which he described as ill-equipped.
Students have no access to text books, he noted, adding that if libraries were well equipped and provided with necessary materials, it would be easy for both teachers and students to teach and learn.
"Government and Ministry of Education have to give more attention to the matter, by making library compulsory for all schools because teaching needs to be encouraged in order to improve the standard of education", he said.
Abraham Ashaolu stressed the need for more libraries to widen horizon of the students, saying that education is incomplete without library.
