Kwara to Evacuate Beggars, Lunatics from Streets
The Kwara State government has completed arrangements to evacuate beggars and lunatics from the streets of Ilorin, the state capital.
After the evacuation, the government also plans to rehabilitate and unite the lunatics with their families.
The special adviser to the state governor on social welfare, Alhaja Aishat Ibrahim, made this known during a visit to Olohunda Trado-Psychiatric Home, Eiyenkorin.
Ibrahim who was also at Olokun Trado-Psychiatric Home, Alagbado - Ilorin, one of the designated centres for the treatment of the lunatics noted that government would continue to create an enabling environment to address the challenges posed by the lunatics.
She said, "their treatment in a bid to restore their sanity and re-integrate them to the society indicate that the government is sincere about its social responsibilities stressing that the exercise has succeeded in re-positioning many lives and enhanced the beauty of our physical environments which had for long been defaced with floating lunatics".
She commended the psychiatrists in charge of the centres for their commitment and honesty, charging them to sustain the confidence reposed in them.
Ibrahim pledged that her office alongside the ministry of Social Development, would further assist in seeking government's attention towards improving the standard of living of the lunatics.
In his comment, the specialist in charge of Olohunda Trado-Psychiatric Home, Alhaji Folohunsho Olori, commended the government for its support, assuring that he would not let the government down.
Also, the psychiatrist at Olokun Trado-Psychiatric Home, Alhaji Abdulkadir Muhammed confirmed that three out of 16 government-sponsored patients are now 98 per cent fit pointing out that drug abuse, spiritual attacks and excessive thinking are major causes of mental problems and solicited more assistance to enable them meet the patients' basic needs.
