Islam not behind insurgency - NASFAT

President of the Nashirullahi Fathi Society of Nigeria (NASFAT) Mallam Sheriff Yusuf has again detached Islam from the insurgency in some parts of the country, saying Islam is a religion of peace.

He said NASFAT would use the opportunity of its world conference to debunk the old notion of ignorance and barbarism associated with Islam. Addressing newsmen in Ilorin on the organisation's second world general conference holding in Ilorin, Yusuf said, "Ultimately, we now seek to present a new face that will reveal the true beauty of Islam and thereby debunk the old mindset of tardiness, ignorance and barbarism that used to be the general impressions about Muslims in the eye of people of other faiths in Nigeria".

According to him, the conference promises to be spiritually enriching, socially exciting and educationally impacting. He added that the group's spiritual meetings were used to celebrate the praise of Allah in togetherness and teaching of Islam in its basic purity.

Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Mohammed Saad Abubakar, the chairman, Board of Trustees of Nasrul Lahi-l- Fatih Society of Nigeria(NASFAT), Alh Abdullateef Olasupo and other eminent Islamic leaders are expected at the conference.

The Sultan of Sokoto is expected to chair the opening ceremony with the support of the Emir of Ilorin, Alh Ibrahim Sulu- Gambari while the conference would be declared open by the Kwara State governor. A legal luminary, Mallam Yusuf Ali, SAN, is billed to deliver a lecture on the theme of the conference which is "National Unity, A precursor to development- Islamic perspective."
