Health workers threaten strike in Kwara.
The union demanded an increase in the retirement age of members from 60 years to 65 years.
The Joint Health Sector Union, JOHESU, and other health care providers in Ilorin said on Tuesday that they would resume their suspended strike after the next 13 days.
The notice was contained in a statement jointly signed by the President-General, the Senior Staff Association of University Teaching Hospitals, Bayo Akintola, Research Institutes and Associated Institutions, SSAUTHRAI, and 10 other health workers associations.
The health workers said that members would begin an indefinite strike and total withdrawal of services from 8 a.m. on May 19, if the Federal Government fails to release appropriate circulars to effect all the negotiated issues.
“Government must look into cases of issuance of circulars and payment of allowances to deserving officers.”
They identified the alleged lopsided and unlawful constitution of board of management in various tertiary health institutions coupled with non-invitation of members of JOHESU to the board as part of the grievances.
JOHESU also cited the outright exclusion of Non- Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institution, NASU, as part of the issue.
The union demanded an increase in the retirement age of members from 60 years to 65 years.
The health workers alleged that the government is undemocratic in its negotiations and acts in a manner perceived to be industrial marginalisation.
“This is provocative and unjust in a democracy, as we perceive this as industrial marginalisation,” the health workers said.
The Nigerian Union and Allied Health Professionals, NUAHP, Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria among others, were listed as some of the unions that would join the strike.
