KWHA Rejects Motion on Review of Voters Register
The Kwara State House of Assembly on Wednesday refused to deliberate on the motion seeking the review of voters register in the state in preparation for the forthcoming local government election.
The notice of the motion was moved by Mr. Tope Olayonu of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) representing Ojomu/Balogun Constituency.
The co-movers of the motion include Mallam Suleiman Sunoboro of Ilesha/Gwanara Constituency, Hon. Hassan Oyeleke of Essa/Shawo/Igboidun Constituency and Hon. Abdulfatai Salman who represents Ilorin North-West Constituency.
Olayonu while raising the motion said the review of the voters register in Kwara State has become imperative to allow eligible voters who are now attain eighteen years take part in the election.
He argued that section 9 of Electoral Act 2010 (as amend) empowers Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to compile, maintain and update, on a continuous basis, a national register of voters which shall include the names of all persons entitled to vote in any federal, state or local government or area council elections.
The lawmaker explained that the last review of the exercise of the voters register in Nigeria by INEC was done in 2010 preparatory to the 2011 general election, adding that an ccurate voters register is a sine quo non for a transparent, free and fair election. He called on the House to urge INEC in Kwara to compile, maintain and update the national register of voters in the state.
However, the motion did not see the light of the day following refusal of members on the floor of the House to second the motion.
When the Speaker, Barrister RazaK Atunwa put a question on whether the motion should be debated or not, majority of the members voted against it.
The motion was consequently rejected by the House.
