Extend River Niger Dredging to Jebba -Kwara

Date: 2013-04-01

Kwara State House of Assembly has appealed to the Federal Government to extend the dredging of River Niger to Jebba to reduce the recurrence of flooding in the state.

Members of the Assembly reached the resolution after debating a motion ‘Prevention of flooding in Kwara State’. Mr. Kamalden Fagbemi, representing Oke Ogun constituency, sponsored the motion.

Kwara is among the states that will likely have flooding in 2013 according to the Nigerian Meteorological Agency recent prediction.

Speaker of the House, Mr. Razak Atunwa, in a statement on Sunday by his media aide, AbdulRahman Sanni, on behalf of the lawmakers, noted that flooding had devastated damage farmlands and property of residents near the bank of River Niger.

He called on the government, as a matter of urgency, to resettle all the communities on the bank of the river and to assist the residents.

He urged the Kwara State Government to map out a deliberate policy to ensure routine monitoring of waterways and prevent dumping of refuse on them.

Atunwa also enjoined the state to enlighten farmers, rural and urban settlers along water ways, river banks on the hazards of flooding, and global warming.

Meanwhile, Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed has forwarded four commissioner-nominees in the state Independent Electoral Commission for screening and confirmation to the commission.

The nominees are Mr. A .T. Ahmed, Ilorin West; Toyin Azeez from Oyu; Mr. Rauf Ishola Ajao, Ilorin East, and Ajibade AbdulRaheem from Moro Local Government Area of the state.
