Kwara Commences Training for 44 Medical Laboratory Scientists on Malaria and TB Microscopy
The Kwara State Government has commenced training for 44 Medical Laboratory Scientists on malaria and tuberculosis microscopy.
The initiative is aimed at strengthening diagnostic capacity and improving healthcare delivery across the state.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Amina Ahmed El-Imam, disclosed this while declaring the 10-day training programme open in Ilorin.
El-Imam described the exercise as a critical step towards improving accurate diagnosis and saving lives.
She urged participants to take the training seriously and apply the knowledge gained in their respective places of work.
The commissioner stressed that laboratory personnel play a fundamental role in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.
She said misdiagnosis could result in unnecessary costs, prolonged illness and loss of lives.
El-Imam added that the quality of information provided by laboratory scientists significantly influences clinical decisions.
She encouraged participants to embrace quality assurance, continuous learning and knowledge sharing. The commissioner urged them to see their profession as a mission and strive for excellence at work.
Earlier, the Director of Public Health, Dr. Oluwatosin Fakayode, said the training would build MLS capacity.
Fakayode said the programme would improve the accuracy and reliability of laboratory diagnosis across the state.
The lead facilitator, Dr. Oladosu Oladipo, commended the state government for strengthening medical diagnosis.
Oladipo is from the ANDI Centre of Excellence for Malaria Diagnosis, University of Lagos.
He particularly commended the government's commitment to improving malaria and tuberculosis diagnosis.
Oladipo urged the state government to sustain the initiative by establishing a dedicated centre for malaria diagnosis.
He said such a centre would further enhance diagnostic services and capacity development.
The training is being conducted in two batches, with each batch undergoing 10 days of intensive theoretical and practical sessions.
The sessions cover malaria and tuberculosis microscopy, combining theoretical instruction with hands-on practical training.
