ANA Congratulates Prof. Yusuf Ali on his 73rd Birthday By ANA Media Team

Date: 2026-09-08

The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) has congratulated Prof. Yusuf Olaolu Ali, SAN, on the occasion of his 73rd birthday, celebrating his sustained contribution to Nigerian literature, reading culture and youth development.

The congratulatory message was contained in a press release issued by the ANA President, Dr. Usman Oladipo Akanbi, and the Acting General Secretary, Wole Adedoyin, who described Prof. Ali as a major literary philanthropist whose commitment has made a significant impact on literary development across Nigeria.

The ANA/Yusuf Ali Literary Awareness Campaign, which began in 2012, has remained a major beneficiary of his consistent annual support. The campaign enables the Association to take literary programmes to schools and communities, reaching at least 5,000 students in 100 schools across the country every year.

The campaign, which initially focused on secondary schools, later extended its reach to university students, tertiary institutions and children's literature. It has encouraged young people to read and write while providing opportunities for students to engage with writers, books and literary activities.

The statement explained that the annual grant, reported at N3 million, serves as seed funding for ANA chapters to implement literary activities, with the chapters providing matching grants to broaden the reach of the programmes. The intervention has also helped strengthen the Association's capacity to sustain literary outreach and advocacy.

Prof. Ali's support has equally contributed to the nationwide reading project of the Association of Nigerian Authors, through which books are provided to young Nigerians to encourage reading and participation in literary activities. The initiative has helped promote awareness of the importance of reading and writing.

Beyond funding, his intervention has encouraged accountability and healthy competition among ANA chapters through proposal and reporting requirements, motivating them to develop effective and innovative literary awareness programmes.

The Association said his philanthropy represents a sustainable model of private support for literature and intellectual development, with his investment extending to young readers, aspiring writers and the broader literary ecosystem.

"Prof. Yusuf Ali has demonstrated that the most enduring philanthropy is one that invests in the minds of future generations. His support has helped young Nigerians encounter books, develop reading habits and discover the possibilities of writing and literary expression," the Association stated.

In recognition of his sustained support, the Association, a few years ago, named its Library after Prof. Yusuf Ali. Situated at the National Secretariat of the Association in Abuja, the Library remains a lasting expression of ANA's appreciation for his contribution to literary development and the nurturing of future generations of Nigerian readers and writers.
