Kwara Assembly seeks bill on Sharia Area Courts

Date: 2013-02-25

The Kwara State House of Assembly is waiting for a bill to separate Area Courts from the conventional judicial system.

However, those to be affected are the Area Courts handling Sharia cases whose matter would be able to go to the Sharia Court of Appeal on the basis of applicable laws.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon Rasak Atunwa, disclosed this when the Grand Khadi of the state Sharia Court of Appeal, Justice Idris Haroon, paid him a visit.

The Grand Khadi had last week, during the Sharia Legal Year celebration, requested the House to make law in this respect.

Responding, Atunwa said the Assembly would be willing to give accelerated passage to the bill as long as it came from the executive through the state Attorney-General.

Haroon had suggested that that Area Courts operating Sharia should be responsible to him instead of the present arrangement in which all Area Courts in the state are accountable to the chief judge.

This, he said, would enhance the growth and development of law and quality of judgement of the affected courts.

The speaker gave assurance that the legislature would give necessary support to the bid to fast track quick dispensation of justice in the state.
