IEDPU President Hails UNILORIN as Integral Part of Ilorin Emirate
The National President of the Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union (IEDPU), Alhaji Abdulmumini Ayo Abdulmalik, has described the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) as an integral part of the Ilorin Emirate, saying the host community remains proud of the institution's remarkable achievements over the years.
Alhaji Abdulmalik made the remarks on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, during an appearance on "Countdown to UNILORIN @ 50", a special personality interview programme on UNILORIN FM 89.3, dedicated to celebrating the University's Golden Jubilee. The programme was jointly anchored by the Head of Station, Mr. Idris Alooma, and the Head of Programmes, Mr. Temitope Olawuyi.
The IEDPU President said the people of the Ilorin Emirate continue to take pride in the University's outstanding contributions to national development, describing it as one of Nigeria's most respected higher institutions. He particularly commended the University for its consistency in maintaining an uninterrupted academic calendar and for fostering peace within its host community.
Alhaji Abdulmalik acknowledged the cordial relationship between the University and the Ilorin Emirate, noting that the bond has remained strong, especially under the current administration led by Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN. He lauded Prof. Egbewole's leadership style, describing him as "a brilliant lawyer, passionate teacher, and capable administrator" who has managed the University's affairs with distinction.
The retired Assistant Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service praised the Vice Chancellor for his humility and open-door approach to leadership, saying he has always engaged every stakeholder with warmth and respect.
Alhaji Abdulmalik, an alumnus of the University, reaffirmed the Emirate's commitment to supporting the institution in its developmental strides. He recalled that the Ilorin community had always rallied behind the University whenever the need arose, pledging continued cooperation as the institution marks its 50th anniversary.
He highlighted the University's positive impact on the community through employment creation and educational opportunities, stressing that Ilorin people remain grateful for hosting such a reputable institution.
Recalling IEDPU's continued support for the University, Alhaji Abdulmalik cited the Union's recent endowment of N2 million for an annual prize to be awarded to the University's best graduating student.
While urging staff of the University to remain diligent and dedicated to their duties, he remarked that "whatever one does is ultimately for oneself," encouraging them to uphold the institution's "Better by Far" legacy.
