Amnesty International Raises Alarm Over Kwara Bandit Attacks
Amnesty International has voiced serious concern regarding the growing wave of attacks by gunmen across several parts of Kwara State. The global rights organisation warned that the relentless violence is actively creating a humanitarian crisis and is stripping residents of their fundamental human rights.
In a post shared on its official X handle, the group strongly condemned the killings and destruction of property that have occurred in numerous communities across the state.
"The Nigerian authorities must end the escalating attacks by gunmen across some local governments of Kwara State," Amnesty International stated emphatically.
The organisation pointed out the disturbing pattern of attacks. It noted that following the deadly assault on Oke Ode in the Ifelodun Local Government Area, which tragically left over 10 people dead, fresh assaults were immediately reported in the Patigi Local Government Area.
According to the group, the new wave of violence has displaced thousands of residents and left many living in fear.
"Ongoing horrific attacks are creating a humanitarian crisis and depriving people of their human rights. The actual perpetrators must be brought to justice."
Amnesty International further lamented that the attackers burnt farms, killed livestock, and abducted women and girls for ransom.
They called on the Nigerian government to take urgent steps to protect lives and restore peace in the affected areas.
