Tribute to Alhaji Bukola Lawal (Central)

Date: 2013-02-14

By Muideen Adebayo Ibrahim

I received the news of your premature death with rude shock and disbelief. When Yemi Olabooye called and said that you were murdered in cold blood, I said how can that be because you were not known to be violent but easy going. He called again and said that three people confirmed to him that you were brutally murdered by Erin-Ile Militants.

When others ran, you chose to stay in your Hotel that you built with your sweat and hard-earned money. This confirms what Shakespeare said that "cowards die many times before their death and the valiant ones die but once." You are indeed a martyr of our time.

Almighty Allah knows best and He did not allow anybody no matter how powerful the person is to know when, where, how and the type of death that will kill any human being.

Your death shook the whole Offa town to the bone marrow and everybody has been lamenting for the past three days and our people are in-consolable. It is now an established fact that you laid your life for the emancipation of Offa and for lasting peace to reign. Because 24 hour curfew was imposed by the State Government immediately you and your Secretary were murdered and our dear town is now like a ghost town.

At the moment, like minds are seriously networking on how to find lasting solution to this ugly and incessant communal war. The question is: why can't we jaw-jaw instead of war-war since all these years. The hatred between the two communities is now generational! Why? Why? Why? Why? Why?

Am pretty sure that if not for the curfew, our people would have overrun Erin-Ile by now!!! Just because of you! This is just one death too many. The killing of our people in 1981 is still fresh in our minds. Bros Bukola, your death was a BIG blow to all of us. Why you? You were too nice, cool, easy going, astute business man, Off personified and what have you. Everybody knows that you cannot hurt a fly let alone kill someone. Why you for God's sake. But I cannot question God because 'akole ti gbe!.'

Though, Erin-Ile people murdered you in cold blood but they did not kill your spirit because your memory lingers on. 'Egbe ni fun eniti opa ara ti ko le pa emi.'

I remember with nostalgia in 1987, when six of us including your beloved two brothers (Shamsudeen Kunle Lawal (Sia-Sia) and Taofeek Lawal) founded Galaxy Clique of Offa, you stood solidly behind us like a rock of Gibraltar and you gave us candid advice, not only that, you usually allow us to make use of the Restaurant at Central Hotel free of charge for our meetings then. Infact that marked the beginning of our activism in OSU and contribution to humanity.

Your immense contributions to the development of our Dear Town (OFFA) in all ramifications cannot be over-emphasized. You gave all to OFFA. It is on record that you lived and died for OFFA. Why you Bros? As we fondly called you!!!

You did not leave Offa for one day; you lived and died in OFFA. When others went for greener pasture, you 'stay put' in OFFA. You served your Daddy (Baba Central) who is now 97 years dutifully and diligently and to God be the glory, you made your fortune in OFFA. However, your life was cut short by enemies of progress.

By the special grace of God your death will not be in vain, because you are now a martyr who laid his life for OFFA.

Based on Islamic injunction, am pretty sure you are now in Aljanah Firdaouz! We meet to part and we part to meet until we shall finally meet to part no more."

ADIEU BROS! ADIEU BROS!! ADIEU BROS!!!
