Kwara Polytechnic Rector Applauds OPay's Scholarship Initiative, Calls for Infrastructure Support
Dr Abdul Jimoh Muhammed, Rector of the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, has commended OPay Digital Services for its scholarship initiative aimed at alleviating financial pressures on students in tertiary institutions.
The Rector expressed his appreciation during a meeting with OPay representatives on Wednesday, who visited the institution to discuss the proposed partnership. He highlighted the importance of such initiatives in advancing educational access and equity, particularly for students facing economic challenges.
Dr Muhammed noted that the selection of Kwara State Polytechnic as one of ten beneficiary institutions was a significant endorsement of the institution's role in fostering academic excellence. However, he urged OPay to expand its philanthropic efforts beyond scholarships to include investments in infrastructure such as hostels, classrooms, and information and communication technology (ICT) facilities, which would further enhance the learning environment.
He called for collaboration in agricultural initiatives, which he believes, would support the institution's drive for food sufficiency while providing students with practical learning opportunities.
Responding, Itoro Udo, OPay Digital Services Representative, said that the initiative aims to foster career development, promote inclusiveness, and provide financial assistance to deserving students.
He noted that the scholarship would be open to all undergraduate students of Kwara State Polytechnic who maintain active OPay accounts, with each beneficiary receiving ?300,000 per academic session.
He stated that at least 20 students would be sponsored annually for the next 10 years, underscoring OPay's commitment to education and youth empowerment.
