KWHA Orders Closure of Illegal Motor Parks

Date: 2012-12-12

Worried by the proliferation of motor parks in Ilorin metropolis, the Kwara State House of Assembly has urged the state government to collaborate with the Police, Federal Road Safety Commission and local government councils in the state capital to as a matter of urgency close down all illegal motor parks, especially those that constitute obstruction to free flow of traffic.

The House in its resolution in a notice of motion, titled "Situation and proliferation of motor parks in Ilorin metropolis", moved by Hon. Suleiman Sunaboro and three other members, expressed worry that situation of motor parks especially within Ilorin metropolis was causing obstruction to free flow of traffic.

The House had last week summoned the state commissioners for Works and Transport, Dr. Abubakar Kannike, and his counterpart in the Local government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Community Development, Alhaji Issa Bawa; FRSC; the Nigeria Police Force, ALGON, TPDA and other stakeholders to appear before it on the situation of motor parks in the state.

According to the Speaker, Barrister Razak Atunwa, the lawmakers want to know the guidelines for the establishment and operation of motor parks; numbers of the approved motor parks in Ilorin metropolis; implications of none approved motor parks; jurisdiction over the establishment of motor parks; and what can be done to sanitize the situation.

In respect of the House's invitations, all the said stakeholders joined the legislature at the Committee of the Whole House yesterday to deliberate on the issue.

The stakeholders agreed at the Committee of the Whole House that there are too many garages both approved and unapproved within the metropolis.

They agreed that illegal garages should be closed down and that less than ten inter-state garages are needed.

The stakeholders equally believed that there is need for law to regulate the activities and establishment of motor parks in the state.

In the submission of the State Commissioner for Works and Transport, Dr. Abubakar Amuda Kannike, all illegal motor parks would be closed down.

Kannike who listed ten guidelines for the approval of motor parks, said the minimum space between two motor parks is 135 metres.

The commissioner solicited for the continued support of the Police and Civil Defence Corps to enforce compliant.

The State Commissioner for Police, Mr. Chinwike Asadu, who spoke through his assistant, Mr. Muftau Ayinde, said the attendant implications of the operations of illegal motor parks is beyond traffic jams.

He advocated a law that will regulate the operations of motor parks, assuring that the police is ever ready to enforce the law.

The representative of FRSC, National Union of Road Transport Workers, Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria and the Executive Secretary of TPDA were among the stakeholders who spoke at the session.

They described the proliferation of motor parks in the metropolis as worrisome and urged the legislature to assist in finding a lasting solution to the menace.

The House later directed the state government and all local government councils within Ilorin metropolis to put up standard measures for the operation of motor parks in the state.

The parliament also ordered the state government and local government councils in Ilorin metropolis to ensure regular monitoring of the motor parks to ensure that standards are kept.
