Oloyede Condemns Boko Haram
Prof. Ish-aq Oloyede, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin (Unilorin), has appealed to Nigerians and citizens of other countries to stop referring to the Boko Haram Sect as representative of Islam, saying the religion abhors any act of terrorism and violence.
"Those who terrorise and kill should be condemned, as Islam absolves itself from all evil deeds for which 'Islamaphobes' direct attacks at it," Oloyede said during the 116th Inaugural Lecture of the Institution, titled 'Islamics: The Conflux of Disciplines'.
"The world is fragile and the nation is distressed because of the domineering discourse of the hate mongers. We need to build bridges of mutual understanding and harmonious co-existence and shatter the walls of hatred.
"We must all realise that we share a common humanity and we all originated from Adam and we shall all return to God, the Just Judge."
The Professor of Islamic Studies and first alumni to become Vice Chancellor of the institution, observed that if justice is incorporated into the conduct of public affairs of all Nigerians and at the global level, the series of challenges facing the human race would be minimal.
He urged leaders at all levels to be role models in character and learning, and advised the Federal Government to make Islamic and Christian Religious Studies a component of general studies in all tertiary institutions.
He further urged governments at all levels to be responsible in the discharge of their activities and be responsive to the needs of the citizenry.
