Kwara Spends N630m on Federal Road

Date: 2012-09-04

Kwara state government has spent about N630 million to fix a trunk 'A' (federal) road in Ilorin, the Commissioner for Works and Transport, Dr. Abubakar Amuda Kannike, has said.

He, however, said the government was not expecting any refund from the federal government on the project.

Conducting journalists round rehabilitation work on the road at the weekend, Kannike said when completed, the road would be in the standard of Amadu Bello way, Ilorin.

He said the government embarked on the project as part of its intervention on federal roads in order to make all roads motorable in the state.

"We are not likely to have a refund because of the policy of the federal government to seek permission of the presidency and get a go-ahead before embarking on any work on federal roads but we cannot wait for the federal government," he said.

On the economic importance of the road, Kannike said it would boost commercial activities on the road "because of the ongoing construction of a modern shopping Mall being constructed by the state government and as well protect properties along the road from flood."

Similarly, Kannike said the government was experimenting a new technology borrowed from Niger and Republic of Benin on the construction of rural roads in Kwara North senatorial district.

"We are testing a new technology of laminating of latrite, on our rural roads in Kwara North." He added that if successful, it would be replicated in other parts of the state to prolong the life span of roads.
