FG urged to establish National Widows Commission to address the plight of widows

Date: 2018-04-29

An appeal has gone to the Federal Government to establish a National Widows Commission that will cater mainly and adequately for the plights of the widows in Nigeria.

A concerned Nigerian and President, African Grassroots Women Empowerment Foundation with headquarters in Igbeti , Oyo State , Mrs Ramatu Gbadamosi who made the plea while speaking with newsmen in Ilorin ,the Kwara state capital, said such commission should also cater for their families and their dependents in the society.

Mrs Gbadamosi expressed concern that most housewives after losing their husbands are always either abandoned by the families or even the government, thereby exposing them to social malice , depression , hazards and other forms of abuses. According to her, if such commission is in place and not a unit under any agency or Ministry ,it would adequately take care of the plights and sufferings of the widows and their families as it is being done in other countries.

The President of the foundation who commended women lawyers in KWARA state for taking up cases of abuses against women free of charge, condemned the high rate of child abuses, and cases of rape of minors in the society She also urged government , banks and privileged people in the society to assist such widows with funds inform of empowerment or soft loans to go into small scale businesses such as farming or weaving to partially solve their domestic problems

. She cautioned women against leaving a wayward life because of their financial crisis .

Mrs Gbadomosi, similarly stressed the need for governments at all levels to revive all moribund industries in the country particularly the textile industries to encourage the patronage of local fabrics .

This she said would and create more job opportunities for the unemployed youths and reduce the high rate of crimes in the society. Answering another question , she enjoined the political class not to forget that it's only God that gives power to whom He wishes and urged them not to over heat the polity as the country is preparing for the general elections but rather dialogue and work towards building a more united nation and a more dependable democracy where insecurity, unemployment and the hunger the nation and her citizens are now passing through would be addressed .

Mrs Gbadamosi suggested the establishment of cattle ranges in all the seven hundred and seventy four local government areas across the country for cattle Fulanis to rear their cattle as a means of solving the herdsmen / farmers crisis and other communal clashes which has unreasonably claimed the lives of many innocent people .

She enjoined the security operatives to be more coordinated to tackle issues of insecurity and other forms of terrorism . The African Grassroots Empowerment Foundation is a non profit Organisation that is dedicated to supporting the education of African youth, care of the widows , the less privileged children and the environment .
