Northern Union Flays NLC over Planned Strike

Date: 2012-08-17

The Northern Union (NU) has kicked against the proposed strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) over the face-off between the Power Holdings Company of Nigeria (PHCN) and the federal government, saying that labour failed to act at the appropriate time.

It also backed government over the deployment of security agents to all major installations and facilities of PHCN, noting that it would avert the kind of decay witnessed in the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

In a statement yesterday in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital, the union said "any strike at this moment for selfish interest of personal emolument no matter how genuine it may look like does not enjoy public support and sympathy as their action is reactionary and belated."

The statement signed by the national coordinator, youth wing of comrade Kolo Jerry and publicity secretary, Muhammed Katum added that, "it is our unanimous position and resolve that the strike is not welcomed and we very strongly kick against it.

"In our opinion, it represents sabotage. The NLC went to sleep when they were to stand up for the masses allowing increase of tariff before sales," the statement said.

"We advise the NLC to feel the pulse of Nigerians on Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) and consider their response to this matter. In short, we are aware of a very huge.
