Stakeholders Support Kwara State Revenue Laws Amendment

Date: 2017-05-27

Financial Experts and Stakeholders in Revenue Administration say amendments in the Kwara State Revenue Administration Bill, 2017 and State Revenue Court Amendment Bill were desirable to fast track dispensation of litigations arising from collecting revenues, due to the State Government.

The Stakeholders made their positions known , while participating in a Public Hearing organized by State House of Assembly on the State Revenue Administration ( Amendment) Bill, State Revenue Court and Amendment to Abubakar Sola Saraki University Law.

The Stakeholders who were of the opinion that the amendments to the two bills, would go along way to improve its revenue base and bring tax evaders to justice, to make the State self sustaining.

Equally, the Stakeholders, in the education sector, resolved that the amendments to include the state Attorney General on the Governing Council of Abubakar Sola Saraki University was long over due.

They were of the view that the inclusion of legal Practitioner on the Governing Council, would save the Ivory Tower from unnecessary litigation, as he would be able to advise the Council appropriately on the smooth running of the University.

They contended that the House would not be running foul of any law, by amending the Act establishing the University, to accommodate the Attorney General on the University Governing Council.

However, the Chairman of the Ethics, Privileges and Judiciary, Barrister Kamaldeen Fagbemi explained that section 82 of the Act establishing the University, had empowered Senate of the Institution to amend the Act, when such need arises. This according to him will create lacuna in the administration of the University, if the House should go ahead with the amendment.

Earlier, the Speaker Dr. Ali Ahmad, while declaring open the Public hearing, restated the commitment of the 8th Legislature towards enacting practicable ,sustainable people oriented
