Lawyer Identifies Intolerance As Major Cause Of Divorce

Date: 2017-05-20

An Ilorin-based legal practitioner, Mr Wasiu Idris, has identified intolerance and lack of understanding among couples as the major cause of divorce in Nigeria.

Idris told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ilorin on Friday that intolerance and lack of understanding among couples had broken many marriages.

"Understanding is a basic ingredient for a successful marriage, but unfortunately this is lacking among couples," he said.

He said young couples rushed into marriage without understanding one another, adding that "this will always lead to break-up in young marriages."

Idris advised intending couples to take time to study each other, understand each other's likes and dislikes for the marriage to succeed.

He blamed most parents for forcing their children into marriage and imposing spouses on them, adding that this also accounted for high rate of divorce among young couples.

"Parents should learn not to enforce any partners on their children because it would lead to a bad relationship," he opined.

The legal practitioner urged the government and religious leaders to organise regularly marriage seminars for the youths in order to orientate and prepare their mind for marriage.(NAN)
