Kwara To Restrict Operations Of Commercial Motorcyclists, Warns Against Land Encroachment

Date: 2012-08-02

Gov. Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara on Wednesday forwarded a bill to the state House of Assembly seeking to restrict the operations of commercial motorcyclists in some parts of Ilorin.

The governor's request was contained in his letter to the House which was read to members by the Speaker, Hon. Rasaq Atunwa.

Ahmed urged the House to give the bill an accelerated passage in view of its importance to the free flow of traffic on some major streets in the state capital.

The governor said that the enactment of the law regulating the activities of commercial motorcycle operators had become imperative.

He said this was because some of the operators were causing security problems in some parts of the state.

"The honourable House may wish to recall that in recent past, there have been occurrences of security breach particularly perpetrated by the use of motorcycles.

"It has therefore become imperative to enhance the security of the state to curb the menace,'' the governor said.

Also on Wednesday, the House directed the state Signage and Advertisement Agency to reposition bill boards mounted wrongly by groups, organizations and individuals.

The House gave the directive while adopting a motion on indiscriminate erection of bill boards in different parts of the state

The Kwara Road Maintenance Agency and the state Ministry of Environment were mandated by the House to remove bill boards obstructing traffic signs and the vision of motorists.

The motion, which was moved by Malam Suleiman Idris representing Ilesha-Gwanara constituency, enjoyed the unanimous support of members of the House. Kwara warns against encroachment on land.

Meanwhile the state  has warned the people of Share and Tsaragi in Ifelodun and Edu Local Government Areas to desist from encroaching on government land.

Governor Ahmed, who gave the warning on Wednesday at a meeting with leaders of the two warring communities, noted that the Kange buffer zone in the area had been gazzetted.

The governor also directed the security agencies to maintain law and order in the area, saying trouble makers should be brought to book.

"Anyone found violating this directive thereby stoking violence in the communities will henceforth face the full weight of the law.

"Anybody seeking to use portions of the land must obtain permission from the Kwara State Bureau of Land," he said.

The governor further implored the two communities to maintain peace, noting that the issue was before a competent court of jurisdiction.

He advised leaders of the two communities not to allow intruders to goad them into breaching the peace in the area.

The governor also warned mischief makers to desist from inciting the communities against each other.

Briefing journalists after the meeting, the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Isiaka Gold, said the governor expressed concern over the feud between the two communities.

According to him, the white paper on the report of the committee that looked into the crisis remained sacrosanct.

The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Kamaldeen Ajibade, explained that no member of the two communities could have access to the Kange Buffer Zone for farming or other activities without the permission of the Bureau of Lands.

The Etsu Tsaragi, Alhaji Aliyu Abdullahi Kpotwa, and the Balogun of Share, Alhaji Olayinola Balogun, assured the governor that peace would prevail between the two communities.
