Recession: AD urges Buhari, others to forfeit security votes

Date: 2016-09-22

The Kwara State chapter of the Alliance for Democracy has urged President Muhammadu Buhari; his deputy, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo; the 36 governors, their deputies; the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, and all the local government chairmen, sole administrators or LG caretaker committee heads, to forfeit their security votes to show their concern for Nigerians as a result of the national economic recession.

The party also urged them to forfeit their salaries and only take their allowances if they were genuinely committed to the 'Change begins with me,' campaign of the Federal Government.

According to AD, members of the National Assembly; ministers and other political appointees at all tiers of government should also forfeit their salaries, and only receive allowances as their contributions to efforts to reduce the hardship of the masses.

The AD Kwara State Chairman, Alhaji Biliaminu Aliu and the secretary, Mr. Micheal Ologunde, on Wednesday spoke on the sidelines of the quarterly general meeting of the state branch of the party in Ilorin, Kwara State.

They said that the money saved from the forfeitures should be prudently injected into the economy to stimulate economic recovery and growth.

They canvassed government's massive investments in agriculture, adding that people should be encouraged to embrace modern agricultural practices.

He also urged Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed to address salary arrears of LG workers, as well as what he called the "rationing and selective payment of workers'' salaries."

Aliu said, "AD Kwara State believes that the economy of Nigeria and Kwara State could be improved if the governors, the deputy governors, all the political office holders, reduce or forfeit their salaries and concentrate on allowances alone. The forfeited salaries should be used for the good of the people."
