Saraki: Senate to amend rules to accommodate rivals

Date: 2016-03-24

As part of efforts to reach a truce, members of the camp of the Senate president, Bukola Saraki and that of his main rival, Senator Ahmed Lawan, have agreed to amend the Senate Standing Orders and to adjust the composition of the committees, our correspondent has gathered.

The agreement was reached at the residence of the former governor of Sokoto State, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko (APC, Sokoto North) during a meeting attended by 10 senators, five from each of the camps.

DailyTrust correspondent reports that the meeting was in continuation of the ongoing truce talks brokered to cement the crack in the caucus of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Senate. There had been internal wrangling within the APC caucus at the Senate, over the emergence of Saraki (APC Kwara Central) as the Senate president. Sen. Lawan was the preferred candidate of the leadership of the party. At the meeting, Senator Ahmed Sani Yarima (APC, Zamfara West), Senator Kabiru Gaya (APC, Kano South), Senator Adamu Aliero ( Kebbi Central), Senator Wamakko and Senator Danjuma Goje (APC, Gombe Central) represented the Like-Minds whose leaning is to Saraki.

The Lawan's camp, known as the Unity Forum, was represented by Senator Suleiman Othman Hunkuyi (APC, Kaduna North), Senator Kabiru Marafa (APC, Zamfara Central), Senator Gbenga Ashafa (APC, Lagos East) Senator Abu Ibrahim (APC, Katsina South) and Senator Lawan (APC, Yobe North).

It was gathered that at the meeting, the camps unanimously agreed to amend the standing orders to reflect the eight newly created committees. In order to calm frayed nerves shortly after his emergence, Saraki had jacked up the committees from 57 to 65. A senator from Lawan's camp told DailyTrust correspondent that they were planning to complete the truce talks before the end of the Easter break.
