Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Corruption (EFCC) Ibrahim Lamorde yesterday said it was unfortunate that politicians being prosecuted on corruption charges are among those campaigning on the mantra of fighting corruption in Nigeria.

Lamorde made this known in Abuja while fielding questions from journalists after the presentation of a special publication by the EFCC titled "Alert on Scam."

Although the EFCC chairman did not mention names, he said: "Without mincing words corruption has become an issue in this political campaign the most unfortunate thing ... people who are currently standing trial, is not that their trial has been concluded or they have been discharged and acquitted by courts are the people who are talking about corruption."

The chairman also exonerated the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Charles Soludo of any culpability in the bribery scam involving an Australian company, the British and Nigerian government in the printing of polymer Naira notes.

Lamorde said: "It happened under his watch and the foreign partners requested certain things to be clarified from him which we did and at the end of the day there was nothing he could say to have done wrongly. And no money could be traced back to him from all the bribes that were given. So he was exonerated as far as that investigation is concerned."

On investigation involving Senator Bukola Saraki, Lamorde said: "...some of the investigation around him are going on, some that we have proven, which was not directly by him, but his associates, last week we took them to court in Kwara, although the court did not sit, a new date has been given for re-arraignment."
