Again, Police intercepts truck-load of ammunition in Kwara
About 22,000 rounds of ammunition concealed in a truck have been intercepted by men of the Kwara State Police command.
The interception came barely two weeks after a detachment of the command uncovered arms factory around Sobi area of Ilorin where guns of different sizes were recovered.
Some people were currently being questioned in connection with the discovery while it was believed that it may not be unconnected with the activities of politicians despite peace accord signed by political parties and candidates in the state.
Addressing newsmen shortly after a peace walk organized by the state office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the general elections in Ilorin yesterday, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Salihu Garuba, said the force was taking cognizance of the preponderance of violence as elections close in.
He stated that the truck was impounded on March 9 while investigation had begun in earnest.
The police boss also disclosed that the culprits would be charged to court as soon as investigation was concluded.
He warned those with evil mind to unleash violence to have a rethink as his command was ready to provide security for the people during the polls.
"The trend was intimidating as of recent. But with you (journalists) and all well meaning people in Kwara State have participated in the accord signing.
"We have been advocating, and physically gone round the length and breadth of Kwara State to advocate violence-free elections. We are trying to mop up fire arms in the hands of the people who are not supposed to be possessing them, and those that are already in our hands, we have taken steps. God so good, the judiciary is now back in session, majority of these cases are already in court", the Police Commissioner said.
