Kwara APC, Belgore Trade Words Over Voters' Card Distribution

Date: 2014-08-21

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State yesterday criticized the alleged involvement of a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Dele Belgore in the disruption of permanent voters' card distribution exercise in Ilorin, the state capital.

Daily Trust gathered that there was shooting at some polling units in Ilorin South on Friday, when the distribution of the cards kicked off. It was further gathered that a corps member was injured in the process.

The APC in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Sulyman Buhari, noted that disruption of the exercise led to brutal attacks on an agent of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and APC members at Oke-Ogun ward in Ilorin-South Local Government Area of the state.

It called on the state police command to conduct a credible investigation into the cause of the incident.

"Not only that APC members were attacked by political thugs, the thugs were so berserk that they didn't spare a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) who was hired by INEC for the exercise", the party said.

Belgore, who had earlier denied any involvement in the violence during the distribution exercise, dismissed the allegations "as untrue, malicious and targeted at "his hard-earned reputation".

In a statement through his media aide, Rafiu Ajakaye, Belgore advised the APC spokesman to withdraw his statement and tender an unreserved apology. He added that failure to do so would compel him to take legal action.

"We do not see politics in this way and would therefore not watch while they unfairly impugn the integrity of the innocent. Again, Mr Buhari has seven days to retract his statement and tender an apology", he said.
