Motorists stuck as flood takes over bridges in Ilorin
The flood waters arising from yesterday's early hours heavy rain resulted in traffic snarl in some parts of Ilorin as motorists and other road users got stuck for some period of time.
It was gathered that the rain, which began around 3am, caused a number of access bridges such as Pipeline, Coca-Cola and Omosebi; all in Ilorin to witness rivers overflowing them.
Many road users who plied the affected areas yesterday morning got more than they bargained for, as they were held up for hours before they could have smooth sail on the bridges, which had been overtaken by flood waters.
Those who could not bear the risk of plying the bridges detoured and meandered their ways through other alternative routes.
Some of the motorists lamented the ugly situation when The Herald visited some of the bridges yesterday.
It was the same story at CAC Junior Secondary School along New Yidi road as flood waters took over drainage beside the school fence and spilled to the main road with concomitant difficulty on vehicular movement.
At Coca-Cola, the river overflowed its bridge with some uprooted plant trees littering the road.
The Herald observed that the Pipeline bridge which was opened for the use of motorists and other users few weeks ago had water overflowing it because of the narrowness of some rings under the bridge which were meant to allow free flow of water.
A motor mechanic in the area who wouldn't want his name mentioned, told reporter that there was nothing with the bridge but only the small rings that were used which inhibited the river from flowing freely.
He said, "The contractor did a good job on the bridge, but our concern is that the rings under the bridge were narrow and could not allow free flow of water.
"Many motorists got stuck here (on the bridge) this morning because the river overflowed the bridge. Some of them had to turn back and look for alternative routes to get to their destinations".
Speaking with reporters at New Yidi road yesterday, the General Manager of the Kwara State Road Maintenance Agency (KWARMA), Engr Usman Baba Jibril said the agency was taking pragmatic approach on the areas affected by the flood waters.
He said some of the drainages that were ravaged by the flood would be de-silted as a measure to avoid flood disaster.
While calling on residents to dispose their refuse properly, the KWARMA boss enjoined some communities that are fond of disposing refuse indiscriminately to forward their request for roro-bins to the state Ministry of Environment and Forestry.
