With e-voting, Unilorin students elect new union exco
The University of Ilorin took its well-known innovativeness a step further last Wednesday (May 28, 2014) when its students elected new leaders, using the electronic voting (e-voting) system. The new Executive Committee, led by Ahmed YakubI showo, a 300 Level Mathematics student, will pilot the affairs of the Students' Union in the 2014/2015 session.
Ishowo emerged the President-elect after polling 919 votes to defeat his five opponents, Aweda Jeremy, who got 505 votes, AlaoIdris, 322 votes, Agboola Jolayemi, 175 votes, Olayemi Michael, 147 votes, and Akanbi Damilare, 86 votes.
In its bid to conduct a free, fair, credible and convenient election, the Union’s Independent Student Electoral Commission (ISEC) adopted the e-voting system, in which students voted through the University portal.
The Chairman of the electoral body, Sulaimon Funsho, described the e-portal voting system as an innovation that affords students the opportunity to vote for their candidates of choice without necessarily having to leave the confines of their classrooms or hostel rooms. The system removed the cumbersome nature of students having to go and queue to be able to vote, thereby missing their lectures in the process.
Before the election day, students were required to complete their voter's registration through the University portal. On election day, voting commenced at exactly 7.00a.m. and ended around 6.00p.m.
At the end of the election, the ISEC Chairman, Sulaimon, announced the results at Lecture Theatre 1 in the presence of all the agents of the various aspirants, security men and campus journalists. Also present during the announcement of the result were the Dean and Sub-Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Abayomi Omotesho and Dr. Abdulraheem Yusuf respectively.
According to the results announced by ISEC, AnifowosheTitilope emerged the new Vice President, Main Campus, while Alabi Elizabeth became the Vice President, College of Health Sciences Campus.
Also elected were Kadiri Kofoworola, General Secretary; Oseni Salmat, Assistant General Secretary; Oludowole Faith Oluwatomiwo, Financial Secretary; Bakare Hammed, Welfare Secretary, College of Health Sciences; and Mohammed Lawal, Welfare Secretary, Main Campus.
