Letters- Open letter to Unilorin VC: Extortion of the Students.
The first occasion is about the tablet computers promised to all new students of the school by the Vice-Chancellor himself(find evidence here: http://www.unilorin.edu.ng/index.php/en/component/content/article/237-unilorinnews/1963-fresh-students-to-get-pc-tablets), for which the almost doubled school fees that every 2013/2014 new student had to pay was justified; so far nothing has been heard about these tablet computers for which every new student paid, and given their anticipation of the tablets and the fact that the school is already in the fourth week of the second semester for the present academic session (2013/2014). New students are now wondering where their money is. Hence, one would think it reasonable that if, for whatever reason, the distribution of those computers is delayed, the students have the right to know why they have not been given the tablets and when they would receive them.
The second occasion is about the school identity card. Up till this moment, some new students have not been given their school ID cards and they are continually being harassed everywhere within the school for not displaying their ID cards.
Just when the concerns of those students started to rise, some faculties (Communication and Information Science is an example) started asking them to pay a compulsory fee (ranging from N250 to N300 per student and not to the school account) for an ID card form and passport; the other new students that have been given their ID cards did not have to go through this process, neither did they have to pay any amount for any ID card form. This amounts to preferential treatment of some students by the school, thus infringing on the fundamental human right of equality, even in an academic environment.
These two issues have made the affected students and whoever hears of it to start thinking that the students are being extorted by the school management, that the school is committing crimes against its students, that the school management is corrupt at all levels and that the present administration is incapable of protecting the rights of the students.
Please note that I am maintaining anonymity because I do not want to go down for this; rumour has it whistle blowers often go down for it, even in an academic environment.
Yours faithfully,
Unilorin Student
