The wife of Kwara Governor, Mrs. Omolewa Ahmed, has provided Mammogram and Cryotherapy machines used to detect breast and cervical cancer respectively in women at subsidised rates. Mrs. Bukola Akinleye,

the Administrator of the pet project of Ahmed's, Life Empowerment Anchors Hope (LEAH), charity foundation, disclosed that about 2,500 women were examined for Breast Cancer in May.

She said that 150 women were detected to have lumps in their breasts.

"This is an alarming trend for us as the number keeps increasing in the state.
 
"About 30 women were also detected with Cervical Cancer," she said.

She added that Cervical Cancer was prevailing in the country as one out of 26 women in the country were diagnosed with the disease, and could stay undetected for about 10 years.

According to her, the cryotherapy machine provided by Ahmed was the first machine in the state, adding that previously; patients had to travel to Ife and Lagos for check ups.

She explained that the machine was used for the treatment of a variety of benign and malignant lesions in the body.

Akinleye noted that the rate of deaths increased as the disease got to stages three and four without detection.

The administrator pointed out that the governor's wife would subsidise the fees to about 30 per cent commencing on Sept.1.
