Rivers United, Kwara United, Others Benefit from CAF Windfall
The four Nigerian clubs Rivers United, Remo Stars, Kwara United and Abia Warriors who featured in this season's CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup are set to benefit from a N559m windfall from the Confederation of African Football following an increase in the prize money of both competitions, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe announced a $2m increase in the prize money for the winners of the CAF Champions League and a further $2m increase for the winners of the CAF Confederation Cup on Monday.
This will see the CAF Champions League winners earn $6m, a 50 per cent increase, whilst the winners of the CAF Confederation Cup will receive $4m, representing a 100 per cent increase.
Aside from the winners, CAF also announced an increase in solidarity payments to clubs eliminated in the preliminary stages of the CAF inter-club competitions from $50,000 to $100,000, meaning the four Nigerian clubs will receive about N559m each, at an exchange rate of N1,398 to the dollar on Tuesday, even if they did not reach the group stages.
Reigning Nigeria Premier Football League champions Remo Stars were beaten 7-1 on aggregate by Mamelodi Sundowns in the CAF Champions League preliminaries, whilst President's Federation Cup winners Kwara United and Abia Warriors were also eliminated in the preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup.
Rivers United were the only team to reach the group stage of the CAF Champions League before they were eliminated, and they could be set for a bigger pay cheque depending on how much CAF pays for group-stage exits.
The last amount awarded for a group-stage exit stood at $700,000, which equals N978,600,000 at an exchange rate of N1,398 on Tuesday. Altogether, Rivers United could pocket at least N1,537,800,000 for reaching the group stage.
Following their disappointing exit this season, where they failed to win a match, the Pride of Rivers are poised to return to the continent next season as they currently lead the NPFL title race by two points with two games in hand.
