Governor AbdulRazaq Confirms Kwara United's CAF Home Matches at Upgraded Ilorin Stadium
Kwara State Governor Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has said the ongoing upgrades to the state-owned Stadium Complex are part of a broader strategy to revitalise Kwara's sporting infrastructure.
During an inspection of the facility on Tuesday, the Governor highlighted key renovation priorities, including dressing rooms, hosting facilities, pitch quality, scoreboard systems, and health and safety standards.
AbdulRazaq confirmed that Kwara United Football Club will host their CAF Confederation Cup home matches at the refurbished Rashidi Yekini Main Bowl of the George Innih Agbazika Stadium, Ilorin.
The move is expected to boost the state's economy, strengthen the club's brand, and increase revenue from ticket sales.
The inspection was led by the Chairman of the Kwara State Sports Commission, Mallam Bolakale Mogaji.
The Governor stressed that the investment goes beyond meeting CAF's technical requirements, aiming instead to position Kwara as a leading hub for sports and tourism in Nigeria.
"We are determined to ensure Kwara United plays its CAF matches here in Ilorin. This is about more than football; it is about boosting our local economy. Hotels, restaurants, and small businesses will all feel the positive impact," he said. "Hosting continental matches in Ilorin is expected to drive higher gate receipts for Kwara United, enhance the club's brand visibility on the African stage, and provide direct economic opportunities for residents.
"We don't want our team to play in Lagos or Abuja. Every match hosted here means business for our people, and pride for our state," the governor added.
