Dr. Olohungbebe Condemns Exam Delays, Calls for WAEC Accountability
Kwara State's Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe, has raised concerns over delays affecting students taking the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) across the state. The commissioner attributed the disruptions to late delivery of examination materials.
Dr. Olohungbebe disclosed the issue in a statement issued by the ministry's Press Secretary, Peter Amogbonjaye, in Ilorin. He voiced concerns during a Wednesday on-site inspection of schools in Moro, Ilorin East, Ilorin South, and Ilorin West Local Government Areas (LGAs), describing the delays-including those impacting the English Language papers-as regrettable.
The commissioner urged the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to improve logistical planning to prevent similar incidents in future exams.
Olohungbebe however commended students, teachers and parents for their resilience, patience and discipline despite the setbacks caused by the delay, praising their orderly conduct.
He noted that it helped maintain calm and ensured the examinations proceeded once the materials arrived.
The commissioner reaffirmed the state government's commitment to quality education and its readiness to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to ensure smooth conduct of future examinations.
Schools visited during the tour included Government Day Secondary School, Shao (Moro LGA), Army Day Secondary School, Sobi, Government Day Secondary School, Karuma and Government Day Secondary School, Oja-Gbooro.
Others include Al-Mumeen International School (Ilorin East LGA), Government Day Secondary School, Oke-Kere (Ilorin South LGA), Ansarul Islam Secondary School and College of Arabic and Islamic Studies Secondary School, Ilorin (Ilorin West LGA).
