Some Fistula Surgeons will be carrying out free repairs on patients suffering from Vesico Vaginal fistula (VVF) in Ilorin the KWARA State capital from tomorrow (Monday) to the thirteenth of this month.

The pragramme which will take place daily will hold at the Sobi Specialist Hospital, Alagbado in Ilorin.

A Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist with the Sobi specialist hospital , Doctor (Mrs) Bolanle Shukura Okesina dropped this hint while answering questions in a Radio Kwara programme "Health Half Hour".

Doctor Okesina urged those that have such conditions to avail themselves of this opportunity as the connection between the bladder and the Virginia would be repaired and if it is the connection between the Rectum and the Virginia, it would also be done and make such woman to again live a normal life.

According to her , the hospital had already started admitting patients for the surgery after they had been screened so that they would be enrolled into the repair programme stressing that presently, five patients are on admission while thirty patients are expected to partake in the surgery from various states of the country including LAGOS , Osun and Oyo while the surgery would still continue after the specialists have left Ilorin.

The Gynecologist said the programme which is in partnership with the state and federal government as well as some international societies is aimed at responding to critical needs of the people suffering from this disease and deliver them on the mandate of promoting health with focus on access, affordability and demand.

Dr Okesina described VVF is an abnormal opening between the urinary system and the Virginia usually after a prolonged Labour not attended by skilled personnel .

She disclosed that every year , Nigeria records a case of about twenty thousand cases of women having this condition and to repair this condition, it takes about five thousand women per year, meaning that it would almost take one hundred years to repair all the women that have this condition.
