JAMB: 3-year validity of examination results is right decision - NANS

Date: 2016-11-02

Mr Tajudeen Habeeb, the Chairman of Kwara Chapter of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), has lauded JAMB for its decision on the three-year validity of its examination results.

Habeeb told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ilorin on Tuesday that this would afford students the opportunity to save cost and time for writing another examination for which they had no certainty of passing.

"The proposed three-year validity of JAMB examination results due to be passed by the legislature is indeed a right decision at the right time," he said. The NANS chairman said that admission into universities, polytechnics, monotechnics and colleges of education had its attendant hindrances since capacity of institutions were limited.

"On this note, I want to emphatically and unequivocally say that the three-year validity for JAMB results is a good and right decision," he said.

He, however, said that the capacity of existing institutions of higher learning was being over stretched and called for the establishment of more institutions across the country.

"In a situation whereby over 100,000 students apply for admission into a university and 75,000 pass and meet the required cut-off mark, but the university only has capacity for 8,000 students, what will be the fate of the others? "In three years, only 24,000 students will be admitted; that is about 33 per cent of the total number of applicants that passed," he said.

Habeeb said that the number would be adding up with no space to accommodate the remaining 67 per cent or other secondary school leavers who passed other types of examinations in their bid to get into higher institutions.NAN
