Unilorin to admit less than 11,000 out of 103,238 applicants – VC

Date: 2016-10-18

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Abdulganiyu Ambali, has said that out of 103,238 applicants comprising 21,082 males and 52,156 females for admission to the university for next session, the university will be able to accommodate less than 11,000.

He stated that the university was receiving high admission pressure from applicants even when some federal universities, according to him, had 148 admission seekers. Ambali spoke on Monday in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, during Unilorin's 32nd convocation media briefing.

He said the institution remained committed to improving its services, expanding its facilities and furthering its frontier through innovative programmes. He added that it was more vigorously committed to meeting the rationale for the establishment of the university, as stated in the Third National Development Plan.

The VC said 67 of 6,069 first degree graduands bagged first class. He added that 1,505 made second class upper division, 3,200, second class lower; 1,124, third class while 70 got pass.

Ambali said, "We received a letter to the effect that the Nigerian Army highest hierarchy has approved a collaborative programme leading to the award of a Master of Arts Degree in Peace and Security Studies with Unilorin, through its Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies.

"Through this programme, senior officers of the Nigerian Army will be trained at Unilorin in continuation of the training at one of their higher educational institutions. With this, the university is poised to impact more and contribute further to the Nigerian project."

Ambali, who is also the Chairman of the Association of West Africa Universities, also said it was unsavoury that no Nigerian university was ranked in the first 100 of the global university ranking. He stated that the Nigerian universities were making efforts to be ranked better.
