Kwara government expresses concern over deforestation
The Kwara State Government has expressed concerned over indiscriminate felling of trees without replacing it with another by those working in the forest.
Commissioner for Environment and Forestry, Otunba Taiwo Joseph who made this known during a stakeholders meeting in Ilorin noted massive deforestation play vital roles in the destruction of properties by heavy storm.
He also noted that massive afforestation is capable of playing vital roles in the amelioration of current global climate change which has caused food scarcity, loss of vegetation among others.
According to the Commissioner, Nigeria has lost over Ninety percent of its forest in the last thirty years saying Kwara State cannot boast of any well stocked plantation. He however encourage kwara resident to develop attribute of afforestation.
The Commissioner therefore called on concerned stakeholders to maintain a synergy with the state government towards ensuring safety of the environment and see trees as their pets.
The event witnessed stakeholders in the forest sector, Special Assistant to the Governor on forest, Special Adviser on Labour and Special Assistant to Governor Abdul Fatah Ahmed on Artisans.
