Community development associations, veritable platform to strengthen good governance - Otepola
A call has gone to community development associations to remain vibrant and engage local government administrators on how the affairs of the people are being governed to ensure overall development at the grassroots. A Non-Governmental Organization, Human Development Initiative made the call in Ilorin during a meeting with community development associations and local government officers.
The coordinator of Ilorin West, Ilorin East and Ilorin South Local Government Budget Watch Committee for Human Development Initiative, Mr Otepola Adeolu Adetosyese stressed the need for communities to be involved in the governance of their affairs.
Otepola who is an Assistant Director, National Orientation Agency, Kwara State Directorate, described community development associations as veritable platforms to strengthen good governance at the grassroots. He said where there was none; people should form vibrant community development associations to engage local government administrators on matters relating to good governance.
He said budget watch committee was a model arrangement where local government officers meet community stakeholders to determine their needs. He said the initiative was to promote good governance and ensure community participation.
The coordinator called on local government administrators to do their best in developing their various councils. Participants at the meeting identified financial challenge as one of the major constraint retarding progress and development of the councils.
They also mentioned the initiative of various council chairmen at addressing the problems of security and infrastructural needs of the people at the grassroots.
