Stop pro and anti-Saraki protests, Peace Group tells IGP

Date: 2015-09-27

The Nigeria Peace Initiative (NPI) on Sunday ?urged the Inspector General of Police, Mr Solomon Arase to stop planned mass protests across the country by forces against and forces in solidarity with Senate President Bukola Saraki to forestall breakdown of law and order.

The Senate President is presently facing trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT on allegations of corruption and false declaration of assets in 2003.

The Coordinator of the organisation, Mrs Anita Bassey said the planned mass protests across the country by both anti-Saraki forces and pro-Saraki forces pose serious security threat to ?the nation.

"?The IGP is advised that as a people we need to consolidate on recent successes by security agencies at maintaining peace and rooting out extremist insurgents from the nation, and not tolerating mass protests sponsored by politicians that could set the country engulf.

"The Nigeria Peace Initiative is concerned that as some anti-Saraki forces are planning mass protests across the country, it has also been gathered that pro-Saraki groups will stage mass solidarity processions. What happens if these mass protests are held simultaneously across the country? Can the IGP assure Nigerians that there wouldn't be casualities should both groups have direct contact during protests? Can the IGP assure Nigerians that hoodlums and sucide bombers wouldn't hijack the mass protests to launch offensives against the state?

"Against the backdrop of current security challenges in the country, the Inspector General of Police, Mr Solomon Arase is advised to stop all mass protests by pro-Saraki forces and anti-Saraki forces to forestall possible break down of law and order".

The? group urged Nigerians to ensure peaceful co-existence in the country.
