NLC Crisis Over - Wabba, Aremu
At last, the leadership tussle in the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has been resolved.
The national president of NLC, Comrade Ayuba Wabba and former vice-president, Comrade Issa Aremu gave this indication in Ilorin, Kwara State yesterday.
The two union leaders spoke when Wabba paid a condolence visit to Aremu in Ilorin over the death of his mother, Alhaja Hafsat Aremu who died on Thursday at the age of 91.
Wabba declared that there was never a faction in NLC but thatsome disagreements occurred which had been resolved, declaring that the congress is now a united entity.
He reiterated that already, the union had started feeling the impact of working together with the struggle over non-payment of salaries for months in Osun State, adding that following the union's intervention, the salary is now being paid.
According to him, the strength of the union lies in its unity because the political class would never advance the workers' interest.
He said, "even when we were pursuing the issue of salary in Osun and I called and he (Aremu) was here, he was the only person that made himself available and we saw the governor, we were able to resolve the issue and the workers are being paid. So I want to really salute your courage. In unity lies our strength, if we are not united, political class will never advance our interest. Everybody seeks for political power to advance his individual or collective interest, nobody would get power and try to advance your interest as a worker, no.
"We then have to redouble our efforts to fight for our rights and continue the contestation for a better society because a lot of the Nigerian public look on to us. We are the only mass-based organisation that is organised in the country. We are the only organised body that has a mass support from our members, that if we say we want to bring about change, it is possible for us to do that once we are able to collaborate with our people at the grassroots.
I want to urge all of us to continue to remain united.
