MAN, 30, JAILED TWICE IN 3 DAYS FOR DRUG OFFENCES

Date: 2015-06-19

A notorious Indian hemp dealer in Lagos has been sentenced twice in three days to a total of eight and a half years imprisonment by two different judges of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos.

The 30 year-old, Isah Afiz also known as Agama who resides at Iketuga Street, Meiran, Lagos, was first sentenced on Monday to 18 months imprisonment by Justice C. J. Aneke for dealing in 29kg of dried weeds that tested positive for Cannabis Sativa (Indian hemp) by Justice C. J. Aneke.

He was sentenced again on Wednesday in a separate case bordering on illicit drug. Justice Okon Abang sentenced him to seven years imprisonment for being in possession of 3.9kg of Indian hemp.

Confirming the two sentences, the Head of Public Affairs of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mitchel Ofoyeju, said the convict was a notorious drug dealer and had separate cases in the two courts that sentenced him. He said: "Afiz was first sentenced on Monday, June 15, 2015 by Justice Aneke and jailed again on Wednesday, June 17, 2015 by Justice Abang.

"In the latter case, NDLEA prosecutor Jeremiah Aernan informed the court that the accused was not a first offender as he was sentenced two days earlier by another court for dealing in Indian hemp.

"We confirmed that Afiz sold cannabis to a female drug trafficker, Toyin Raimi before police apprehended him at Atubaje Street, Agege, Lagos and transferred him to NDLEA. He was found with Indian hemp when the police arrested him. The convict pleaded guilty and begged for forgiveness before his second conviction. He was brought to court from prison custody.

"I want the court to forgive me and have mercy on me. I am married with children and I want to be with my family. I have made up my mind not to sell Indian hemp again. If you forgive me I will go back to my village in Kwara State to farm," Afiz pleaded.
