NFF, Kanu Pay Tribute to Yekini
The Nigeria Football Federation and former Eagles striker Nwankwo Kanu have paid tribute to Nigeria's highest goal scorer of all time late, Rashidi Yekini two years to the day he died in 2012.
The Kwara State born striker died in 2012 at the age of 48 after a longtime illness and the NFF and Kanu through their Twitter account paid tribute.
"When a great man dies, for years the light he leaves behind him, lies on the paths of men. Continue to Rest in Peace our Legend Rashidi Yekini Today we remember, YeKing of Goals, the Goals Father, Rashidi Yekini (October 23, 1963 - May 4, 2012)," the NFF Twitter account tweeted before Kanu retweeted the exact same words.
Yekini scored 37 goals as a Nigerian international, and represented the nation in five major tournaments, including two World Cups where he scored the country's first-ever goal in the competition.
He was also named the African Footballer of the Year in 1993. The FCT recently honoured him by naming a street after him for his feat as the first Nigerian to score at a FIFA World Cup.
