Kwara community seeks release of detained chiefs
THE Chairman Oro-Ago community in Ifelodun Local Council of Kwara State, Chief Richard Olushola, has appealed to the police for the release of four members of the community who were arrested during a recent clash between members of the community and Fulani herdsmen. He said their lives are endangered due to lack of access to medical care.
According to Olusola, in a press briefing in Ilorin yesterday, the four men are on medication for hypertension and diabetes and had been denied access to their drugs over eight days since their arrest.
"We are not sure of their destination at present. Chief Omotayo Abidogun, Chief Sunday Odeyemi, Mohammed Ologemo and Ganiyu Ibrahim are on drugs due to hypertension and diabetes.
We had suffered enough losses since the beginning of this hostility in our God's given land. We are not going to take it lightly if we should lose these illustrious sons of ours due to a breach of their fundamental human rights," he said. It would be recalled that a bloody clash had occurred in the town between the natives and Fulani nomads a fortnight ago, where two people died.
He added, "what is strange about the action of the police is that none of the Fulanis who caused the crises were arrested, only the natives who were trying to defend their community from the assailants have ironically now become victims of police intimidation, harassment, arrest, detention and torture."
He added, "We had sent petitions to the Director General of the Department of State Services, Abuja on all these but we are yet to get a reply."
