Nat'l Conference: Kwara Muslims Faults Presidency over Nomination of 150 Delegates
Ahead of the proposed national conference, the Muslim community in Kwara State Tuesday faulted the alleged plan by the presidency to nominate 150 delegates for the conference.
The Muslims also cautioned against imposition of delegates on the people by the state governments, canvassing for the adoption of referendum by each state in selecting delegates for the conference.
The group made its position known in a communiqué issued at the end of a stakeholders' meeting in Ilorin to deliberate on the proposed conference.
The communiqué jointly signed by the Chairman and Secretary of the group, Professor Yusuf Lanre Badmus and Dr. Abubakar Aliagan respectively, stressed the need for the conference to address issues of corruption, impunity and rape.
The group also advocated public declaration of assets on assumption of public offices by public office holders and at the end of their tenure of office.
It urged the conference to address the 'plight' of female Muslims who in her own right sustained their dignity with the use of Hijab and Niqab, stressing that it was the fundamental human right of female Muslims to use Hijab or Niqab.
This religious right, the group insisted, was guaranteed under the constitution, the Child Right Act and other International Acts.
It equally opposed the designation of Nigeria as a secular state and advised delegates to the conference to adopt a multi- religious status for the country.
The group also urged the presidency to recommend the compulsory teaching of religious studies from nursery to secondary school level.
"However, no student attending any school should be made to study or participate in any religious observance different from that of his or her parents. This is in line with the National Policy on Education and the Nigerian Constitution which is being flouted with impunity," the group stated.
